Created from 1961 to 1964, the theme of The Monkey King is inspired by the Chinese classic novel Journey to the West. The story follows the free and brave Monkey King who lives in the Huaguo mountains. In order to get a legendary weapon, he single-handedly challenged the Jade Emperor’s palace. The Monkey King is a heroic symbol of pursuing freedom and challenging the authority in Chinese traditional culture.

As well as being awarded 2nd place in the Chinese Film Baihua Prize, it also earned the Special Short Film title at the 13th Karlovy Vary Film Festival.

This remastered version was chosen as the opening film at the 2019 Shanghai International Film Festival .
