Dr Herman Yau Lai To studied film at the Department of Communications, Hong Kong Baptist College (now known as “ School of Communications, Hong Kong Baptist University”) between 1981 and 1984. He spent much of his early days in Rock’n Roll music and making independent films.
Being active in the Hong Kong film industry since the 1990s, Herman is considered one of the most active directors in the region and has made films in all genres. Although commonly being associated with big budget blockbusters, Herman often embeds critical reflection on social issues and universal messages in his films. If one pays attention to the details in his films, it is evident that he cares dearly about the destiny of Hong Kong, its people and its relations with mainland China.
In between those 100 films, Herman also made time to complete a PhD degree at Lingnan University and was awarded a doctorate degree in 2015.
