Biography of Chang Guang Xi
Where do we even start to introduce this animation master, Chang Guang Xi? He is 78 years old, and possibly the most experienced animation artist in China. He has dedicated his whole life to animation making. But still, there is yet a full biography about this legendary artist in English on the internet.
Chang was involved in many classics such as Nezha Conquers the Dragon Sea (1979), showing at this festival. Although not widely credited, he was one of the main animators. This film was part of the Out of Competition screening at Cannes in 1980. For Chinese animation, that was quite a significant achievement.
He is the director for Lotus Lantern (1999), the first Chinese commercial animation when the country started to experience its economic boom. This film remains in many’s memory. It was almost a Disney moment in China when animation became mass entertainment.
Born in Chongqing, he started his animation career in 1962 at the Shanghai Animation Film Studio. In 1987, not known by many, he won an award at the main competition at Cannes’s short film category with Academy Leader Variations among other international directors. He was former Director of the Shanghai Academy Film Animation and is a member of ASIFA.
